Each child’s treatment is carefully individualized and developed by a multidisciplinary team that works together to understand the whole child — emotionally, behaviorally, socially, and developmentally. Treatment focuses on helping youth build emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and positive coping skills in a consistent and predictable setting.
Youth participate in evidence-based therapies that may include individual, group, and family therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychiatric services, and structured sensory interventions designed to support trauma recovery. Education is an important part of treatment at Abraxas I. Youth attend an on-grounds, privately licensed middle and high school where they can earn transferable credits, work toward a diploma or GED, participate in credit recovery, and prepare for SAT testing or online college courses. Certified special education teachers, a school psychologist, and guidance counselors provide academic and emotional support. Career and technical education opportunities allow youth to earn industry-recognized certifications that support future employment.
Family involvement is a cornerstone of our program. Master’s-level therapists provide weekly family therapy sessions, either in person or by phone, to address challenges at home and strengthen family relationships. These sessions also focus on preparing families for their child’s return home and maintaining progress after discharge. Families are offered regular visitation opportunities, transportation assistance when needed, and quarterly family support events that provide connection, education, and shared understanding.
In addition to treatment and education, youth have access to workforce development opportunities, community service activities, vocational services, and athletic programming. Every aspect of care at Abraxas I is designed to support healing, growth, and a successful transition to the least restrictive environment possible.
