Abraxas Academy Students Construct USS Constitution

January 30th, 2019

Over the last month Mr. Swavely, Abraxas Academy Carpentry Instructor, and five Abraxas Academy students have been working on a birdhouse to enter into the Habitat for Humanity of Berks County 4th Annual Birdhouse Challenge.

The objectives of this challenge are to think outside of the box, be as creative as possible, and create the most unique birdhouse from any material. The birdhouses will then be auctioned off on March 19th in a live auction.

After throwing around some ideas, Mr. Swavely and his students decided to construct a model of the USS Constitution along with assistance from Mr. Roda’s art class with painting the project. The ship is constructed out of wood with the exception of the masses. There was a lot of very precise cutting and gluing involved which required patience and accurate placement. The young men really enjoyed being involved in this project and are very proud of their accomplishment.
