September is National Recovery Month

September 20th, 2018

Every September, SAMHSA sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover

At Abraxas I staff and residents have the following activities and events planned for the month as they support and celebrate National Recovery Month.

  • Pie/Coffee day to kick off Recovery Month for our staff teams during which staff were asked questions about recovery, abuse of drugs, etc.
  • Daily facts on Drugs/Alcohol are sent out to the entire facility via email and discussed with residents during homeroom after school.
  • Recovery Month T-Shirt Design contest was held for youth in the Drug & Alcohol dorms. All residents will be receiving a T-Shirt with the winning designs. A resident in Mohican dorm and a resident in Dakota dorm won the design contest! Clients will be wearing their T-Shirt in support of National Recovery Month.
  • Armstrong, Clarion, Indiana Drug and Alcohol Commission will be on grounds 9/17 and 9/24 to conduct groups with our residents to discuss drug abuse and recovery.
  • A recovery walk will be scheduled (date to be determined ) on grounds where our clients and staff will walk a mile and at certain stations on the walk will stop and be provided literature on drug abuse, snacks (eating healthy is important for recovery), exercise, etc.
  • During a school day, we will be announcing over the intercom system a moment of silence for those who lost somebody to drug abuse/addiction. This will happen on and off throughout the school day. Facts will be discussed for example, every day 100 people die from drug abuse.
